Custom whiteboard branding: colour, shape or both?

Want to add your brand to a custom whiteboard? There are two main routes: branding through colour and branding through shape, and many custom whiteboards combine both approaches. On a Chameleon custom whiteboard, colour and shape are defined during the manufacturing process rather than added afterwards. So, how do you decide which approach is right for your project?

Branding through colour

A custom colour whiteboard uses a colour-matched or tinted section of the ceramic steel surface to carry the brand, most commonly through Chameleon’s SatinTones range, which offers 15 tones from soft neutrals to deeper shades. The board’s shape and size stay exactly as ordered, and the coloured section still writes and erases like a standard white board, since it is the same ceramic steel material with the same lifetime warranty on writing and dry-erase performance, not a separate coating. When specifying a branded whiteboard, a colour reference can be matched and confirmed before manufacture. This makes it possible to achieve a consistent brand colour across different elements of the interior, and it combines easily with a smaller waterjet-cut detail later in the same order.

Imagine a meeting room where the walls already carry the company’s brand colour. A custom whiteboard finished in a matching SatinTones tone, a warm terracotta or a deep sage for example, continues that colour scheme onto the wall while remaining a fully functional writing surface, with the same markers and the same dry-erase performance as a standard board.

Branding through shape

A custom shape whiteboard uses a waterjet-cut logo, skyline or motif to carry the brand instead of, or alongside, colour. This changes the board’s physical geometry rather than its finish, and the effect on writing area depends entirely on where the cut sits. A logo cut into a corner or along the outer edge changes little about the usable surface, while a large cut-out placed within the writing area itself will noticeably reduce it. Because the shape is cut into the board, the design needs to be finalised before manufacture. Once produced, the cut-out shape cannot be added or changed afterwards, though it will not fade or wear the way a printed or coated finish could, since it is a permanent physical shape rather than a surface treatment.

For the same meeting room, a waterjet-cut version of the company logo integrated into the board’s outline creates a much stronger visual statement than colour alone, though the design still needs to account for the space the cut takes up.

Colour vs shape: which custom whiteboard branding suits your project?

The table below summarises the practical differences between the two approaches for a custom whiteboard branding project.

Colour Shape
Brand impact Subtle Strong
Writing area Usually unchanged Depends on design
Physical geometry Unchanged Can change
Best for Consistent branding Statement pieces
Installation Standard May require planning

In short, colour suits a business that wants a consistent, low-key brand presence across many rooms, while shape suits a single standout piece such as a lobby centrepiece or a board that regularly appears in photos of the space. Cost differences tend to follow complexity rather than technique: a single flat colour match and a modest waterjet-cut logo cost about the same to specify, and costs rise when a colour needs custom mixing beyond the standard SatinTones range, or when a cut-out shape becomes highly detailed.

Why not combine both

The two techniques are not mutually exclusive. In fact, combining them is often the most practical option for a personalised whiteboard. A SatinTones base can reinforce the brand colour, while a waterjet-cut logo or detail adds a distinctive visual element. This approach can help keep most of the writing area practical while still making the board clearly recognisable as part of the brand environment. See this in practice in our Royal Cosun case study, where a waterjet-cut wordmark and the room’s accent colour work together as one branding element.

A practical way to decide before ordering

Start by asking whether the goal is a distinctive object people notice and photograph, or a clean brand presence that does not draw attention to itself. The first case tends to favour a shape-based cut, even at some cost to writing area. The second case tends to favour a colour-matched finish, which keeps the board’s full practical use intact. A few questions worth raising with a supplier before ordering a custom whiteboard:

  • How much visual impact is needed: a subtle brand cue or a standout feature
  • How much writing area can genuinely be spared, if any
  • How often the branding is likely to change in the next few years
  • Whether the room already has a strong existing colour scheme to match
  • Whether the board needs to match other branded elements in the interior

Checking this against how the room is actually used day to day, rather than choosing based on which option looks better in a supplier’s sample photos, tends to produce a whiteboard with logo or colour detailing that the team is still happy with a year later.
