A solid masonry or concrete wall generally takes a whiteboard’s weight directly through standard fixings, with little extra preparation needed beyond locating a level, even surface. A stud wall is a different case: the fixings need to land on the timber or metal studs behind the plasterboard, not just the plasterboard itself, or the board will pull away from the wall over time under its own weight. For a large-format board, missing the studs is not a minor issue, since the surface area and weight involved put considerably more strain on each fixing point.
Where stud spacing does not line up conveniently with the board’s fixing points, a mounting rail spanning multiple studs is usually the more reliable solution.
A typical stud wall uses timber or metal uprights spaced around 400 to 600 millimetres apart, which rarely lines up neatly with the fixing points on a large board bought off the shelf. This is normally solved with a horizontal mounting rail fixed across several studs, spreading the load evenly rather than relying on two or three fixing points to carry the full weight of the board.
