Neither material is wrong for every situation, but for daily, long-term use on a large scale, the evidence consistently points towards ceramic steel as the more reliable choice.

Before committing to a large-format whiteboard, requesting a physical sample of the ceramic steel surface, rather than judging from a photo, is the most reliable way to assess finish quality and marker performance. Testing a few different marker brands directly on the sample, including cheaper ones likely to be used daily, gives a more realistic sense of how the board will actually perform once installed.
