A ceramic steel surface is fired at high temperature onto a steel backing, producing a much harder, less porous finish than laminate. Pigment has far less opportunity to embed itself, which is why a large whiteboard specified in ceramic steel tends to resist ghosting for the full life of the board. This durability is also why ceramic steel is commonly specified for shared, heavily used large boards in particular. This durability is also why ceramic steel boards are commonly specified for shared spaces used by multiple teams, where daily wear from many different users accumulates faster than on a board used by one person. This is not an absolute guarantee. A high-quality ceramic steel surface makes ghosting considerably less likely and easier to remove when it does occur, provided the right markers and cleaning practices are used, rather than eliminating the possibility entirely regardless of how the board is treated.
