Ghosting is the faint shadow of previous writing that remains visible after a normal wipe. It happens when pigment from a dry erase marker works its way into microscopic pores or scratches in the surface, rather than sitting cleanly on top of it where a standard eraser can lift it away. This is different from a genuine stain, which sits on top of the surface rather than within it, and generally responds better to a thorough clean. Once pigment has settled into a surface this way, no amount of extra wiping pressure will bring it back out, since the problem sits beneath the surface rather than on top of it.

Melamine and laminate whiteboards have a coating that wears thin with repeated use. Using the wrong cleaning product is one of the more common causes of premature ghosting, since some solvents can soften a lower-grade surface coating over repeated use. Leaving marker on the board for days at a time before erasing also gives pigment more time to settle in. Storing markers cap-down against the surface for long periods can also contribute, since concentrated pigment sitting in one spot has more opportunity to settle in.

A light daily wipe with a proper dry erase cleaner, rather than an occasional deep clean, keeps pigment from building up in the first place. Erasing fully rather than partially, and avoiding permanent markers entirely, are the two simplest habits that make the biggest difference. On a large board specifically, covering the full surface consistently during cleaning matters more, since an unevenly cleaned board tends to show ghosting first in whichever section gets less attention.

Ghosting is rarely bad luck. It is a predictable outcome of surface material and cleaning habits interacting over time, and both matter more on a large board than a small one simply because more surface is exposed to daily use. Ceramic steel, cleaned consistently, is the combination most likely to stay ghost-free for years. A large whiteboard specified this way tends to still look considerably newer than one specified without the same attention, even after years of comparably heavy use.

Rooms with heavier daily use, more varied marker brands in circulation, or less consistent cleaning habits tend to see ghosting appear sooner on a lower-grade surface than a quieter, more carefully maintained space would.
