Attempting a DIY frameless install without this assessment is one of the more common causes of a board that never quite sits flush. On a live fit out, the install usually needs to happen after painting and flooring but before final snagging, since the rail fixing can mark a finished wall if done too early or too late in the programme, so flagging this sequencing to your main contractor avoids a rework visit. Most single panel installations are a two to three hour visit, but if other trades such as electricians or flooring contractors are still working in the space, that visit may need rescheduling around them. For an occupied office, ask your supplier whether the install can run outside core hours so the room stays usable in the meantime, and confirm access hours with building management ahead of time to avoid an awkward conversation with security on the day.

Confirm the wall type (masonry, plasterboard, partition) has been shared with your supplier in advance, and that someone has checked for services such as cabling or pipework behind the fixing points. A frameless board is straightforward to install correctly the first time, but awkward to reposition once it’s up.

Scheduling it too early risks damage from later trades; too late risks disrupting a room that’s already back in use.

Not every wall can take a frameless board’s fixing method without reinforcement: stud walls with wide spacing or very thin partitions sometimes need a backing plate added first. This is exactly what a pre installation check is for, and it’s cheaper to solve at that stage than after the panel has arrived on site. Older buildings with slightly bowed or uneven walls sometimes need shimming behind the concealed rail, and unusual constructions, such as exposed brick or curved partitions, are worth a second opinion before the install date is fixed. Oversized frameless panels also need careful handling during delivery since there’s no frame to protect the edge, and if an installer opens up a wall and finds something unexpected, agree upfront how that gets resolved before work continues. Sharing recent photos of the wall with your supplier before the site visit, rather than waiting until the day, often flags this kind of issue early enough to solve without delaying the install.

A thorough installer will leave you with a note of exactly where the rail is fixed and what fixings were used, which is useful if the wall is ever redecorated or if a second panel is added later and needs to align with the first. Keeping this record alongside the general facilities file, not just with the original invoice, makes it easy to find years later. Agree beforehand who does the final inspection, whether that’s the facilities manager, the project lead or whoever specified the board, and what finished means in practical terms: flush, level, no visible marks on the surrounding wall. Photographing the finished install from a few angles at sign off also gives a useful reference if any dispute arises later about the condition it was left in. This is particularly useful if the board ever needs to be removed and remounted after a future refurbishment.
