Four large classrooms add up to a substantial area of wall that needs some kind of finish before a room is usable at all, regardless of what else goes on it. On a project that size, plasterwork and standard wall finishes are a genuine budget line, and one that adds nothing to how the room actually gets taught in once it is done.

TU Delft’s brief was not only functional. In an era where education goes beyond traditional teaching methods, the classrooms needed to feel inviting and stimulating for students and teachers, not just finished and usable. A plain plastered wall would have solved the first problem without touching the second.

Rather than finishing the wall first and adding a whiteboard wall afterwards, the panels were integrated directly onto the raw wall, eliminating the need for plasterwork or other wall finishes underneath them. The whiteboard wall became the wall finish itself across the full 480 m², not an addition sitting on top of one.

Specifying whiteboard walls at this scale meant the same 480 m² did double duty: it finished the wall and gave every one of the four classrooms a full-height writing surface, rather than treating the finish and the teaching tool as two separate budget items in two separate trades.

Above the writing surface, a wave-pattern band runs the length of the room, giving the classrooms a visual identity beyond the plain white panel most lecture halls default to. That detail sits directly on top of a working writing surface rather than on a separate decorative wall, which is only possible because the whiteboard wall was treated as the finished wall itself, not an add-on competing with the finish for the same space.

Skipping plasterwork and standard wall finishes across 480 m² produced a measurable reduction in TU Delft’s costs for the project, on top of giving four classrooms a genuinely usable, floor-to-ceiling writing surface rather than a single board mounted on an otherwise plain wall.

With the writing surface built into the wall itself rather than confined to one panel at the front, the classrooms support the kind of dense, worked-through content, extended equations, diagrams, notes carried across a full lecture, that a single standard-sized board could not hold in one place. That is a different outcome from simply having somewhere to write; it is a room that keeps up with how a technical subject actually gets taught.

On a project with a substantial area of wall still to be finished, it is worth checking whether a whiteboard wall can replace the finish entirely rather than being specified as an addition to it. The saving is realised at the point the plasterer’s scope shrinks, not afterwards, so the decision needs to be made early enough in the programme to actually remove that budget line rather than run both in parallel.
