Why floor area alone doesn't determine board size
A long, narrow learning space and a wide, shallow one of identical floor area have very different furthest-seat viewing distances, which is the figure that actually drives how large a legible board needs to be, not the total square footage.

Measuring the furthest relevant viewing distance

A specific ratio some universities apply: for detailed technical diagrams with small labelling, board width is sized closer to one-sixth of the furthest viewing distance, compared with roughly one-eighth for simple large-text content, reflecting how much more resolution detailed content actually needs to remain legible.
Confirming the calculation with a practical test
Testing legibility from the calculated furthest seat with sample text at the intended size, before finalising an order, confirms the calculation holds up in practice rather than remaining a theoretical figure.
