Marker glide
On a ceramic steel surface, a dry erase marker moves smoothly without excessive resistance, but the surface has just enough texture that the marker tip doesn’t skate as freely as it does on glass. Glass tends to feel slicker and can make handwriting look less controlled for some users, since there’s very little friction to steady the hand.
Erasing and residue
Because ceramic steel is non-porous, marker ink sits on top of the surface rather than settling into microscopic pores, which is what makes it wipe away cleanly with a dry cloth. Painted steel and melamine are more porous at a microscopic level, and over time this is what causes old marker pigment to build up as visible ghosting, even after regular cleaning.
Repeated writing and erasing over time
The writing feel on a good ceramic steel surface stays largely consistent for years, since the fired coating doesn’t wear down the way a painted or laminated surface gradually does. On melamine or painted steel, repeated erasing with pressure can slowly dull the surface finish, which changes both the writing feel and the visual appearance over time.
Surface feel under the hand
Resting a hand on a ceramic steel board while writing feels smooth and slightly cool to the touch, similar to glass but without the same level of slickness. Melamine tends to feel warmer and slightly softer under the hand, which some people prefer for tactile comfort, even though it doesn’t hold up as well under heavy daily use.
