The finished appearance of a flush whiteboard depends on a series of small decisions made before installation day, none of which are visible in the completed result if they’re handled correctly. That invisibility is exactly the point, and also why they’re easy to skip when a project is under time pressure.

This is part of why two seemingly identical whiteboard installations, on paper, can produce visibly different results in practice: the difference usually lies in exactly these unglamorous details rather than in the board itself.

Most flush whiteboard installations can absorb only a few millimetres of variation in the wall’s flatness before a gap becomes visibly noticeable at typical viewing distance. Beyond that tolerance, packers or a backing panel become necessary to correct the difference rather than relying on the fixing alone.

Older buildings with solid plaster walls are more prone to this kind of variation than newer stud-built partitions, which is worth factoring in in particular on refurbishment projects rather than new-build fit-outs.

Packers are thin shims placed behind specific fixing points to correct small variations in wall flatness, effectively levelling the board’s mounting plane even when the wall itself is slightly uneven. They are a routine part of most flush installations, not a sign that something has gone wrong with the wall.

An experienced installer typically carries a range of packer thicknesses on site specifically for this purpose, so minor wall variation rarely causes a delay once it has been identified in advance.

This is a normal, expected part of a competent installation rather than an extra cost to query, and a supplier who raises it proactively is generally more experienced than one who doesn’t mention it at all.

Different fixing types sit at different depths and require different amounts of clearance behind the board, which in turn affects how flush the final reveal looks against the surrounding wall. A fixing chosen purely for holding strength, without considering the resulting reveal, can leave the board sitting slightly further off the wall than intended.

This is one of the details worth asking a supplier about directly, since a fixing system chosen purely for cost can produce a noticeably less flush result than one chosen with the finished reveal in mind.

Heavier boards generally need a fixing rated well beyond the board’s actual weight, both for safety and because a fixing working near its limit is more likely to allow slight movement over time, which shows up eventually as a less flush result.

A short wall survey covering flatness, wall type and fixing clearance, shared with the supplier before the board is manufactured, is what allows tolerances, packers and fixings to be planned rather than improvised on site. This single step accounts for most of the difference between an installation that looks flush and one that doesn’t.

For a straightforward masonry wall in good condition, this survey can take as little as fifteen minutes, making it a disproportionately small time investment relative to the finish quality it protects.
