A ceramic steel surface holds magnetic pull consistently over years of use and resists scratching, staining and ghosting from markers far better than a painted steel sheet. Painted steel is cheaper up front but tends to lose writing clarity and magnetic grip noticeably faster, which matters most on a board that’s written on and erased daily rather than occasionally. The manufacturing process is the key difference: ceramic steel is fired onto the steel backing at high temperature, fusing the two into a single hard-wearing layer, while paint sits on top of the steel and wears away as a separate, softer layer over time.

Smaller magnetic boards are usually fixed directly to the wall with concealed brackets, which is straightforward but fixed once installed. A rail-mounted system allows the board to be levelled precisely, removed for redecoration, or reconfigured if the room layout changes, an option worth considering for any wall-spanning installation likely to move within its lifetime rather than a one-off small panel. Rail systems typically cost more at installation but reduce disruption significantly if the board ever needs to come down temporarily, for example during an office repaint.

A frameless, edge-to-edge finish gives the cleanest look and avoids a visible frame breaking up a long wall-spanning installation, which matters when several panels are joined to cover a full wall. A slim aluminium frame is a reasonable alternative where the board is a single, smaller panel and a defined edge is preferred, but on a multi-panel wall it tends to draw the eye to every seam. Framed panels can also be marginally easier to handle during installation, which is worth weighing against the visual preference for a frameless finish on smaller single-panel jobs.

Where a magnetic board spans more than one panel, the seam quality determines whether it reads as one continuous surface or a row of separate boards. Precision-cut edges and a consistent substrate thickness across panels keep the join nearly invisible and, importantly, keep magnetic pull even across the seam rather than weaker right at the join. It’s worth asking a supplier directly how they finish panel joins and, where possible, seeing a sample or an existing installation before committing to a multi-panel specification.

Standard white remains the most common choice for maximum marker contrast, but a growing number of installations use a pale grey, muted colour or branded background instead. Any non-white finish should be checked for marker visibility before ordering at scale, since darker backgrounds can make standard whiteboard markers harder to read from a distance, particularly under lower ambient lighting.
