Porcelain steel is the term more commonly used in North America, where the coating is often described as a porcelain enamel fired onto steel. Ceramic steel is the term used more consistently across Europe, including by Chameleon. Enamel whiteboard is an older term that predates both, carried over from enamelled steel signage and early whiteboard manufacturing. None of these terms is more technically correct than the others; they describe the same category of material through different regional and historical naming conventions.

Regardless of which term a supplier uses, the core construction is the same: a steel sheet coated with a ceramic or porcelain enamel layer, fired at high temperature so the coating fuses permanently to the steel rather than sitting on top of it as paint would. This fusing process is what gives the surface its magnetic backing, its resistance to scratching and staining, and its non-porous finish that wipes clean without absorbing marker residue.

The shared name doesn’t guarantee identical performance. Coating thickness, the quality and gauge of the steel substrate, the firing temperature and process, and the consistency of manufacturing all vary between suppliers, even when two products are both marketed as porcelain steel or ceramic steel. Two boards can carry the same generic material description and still differ in how long the surface stays scratch-free or how evenly it holds a magnet.

For architects and facilities specifiers, the practical takeaway is to look past the label. Ask for the actual technical specification: the substrate gauge, the coating composition, the firing process, and what warranty the manufacturer backs the surface with. A board correctly described as ceramic steel or porcelain steel is not automatically equivalent to every other board carrying the same description.
