Instead, a whiteboard wall is usually built from several panels installed edge to edge, engineered so the join between them is as unobtrusive as possible.

A well-made panel join sits nearly flush, with a narrow, consistent gap rather than an uneven seam. The panels are aligned during installation so the join reads as a deliberate line rather than a manufacturing compromise, and importantly, writing and erasing work the same right up to the edge of each panel.

If ghosting does show up on a whiteboard wall, it’s most often near a panel join, where cleaning tends to be lighter than across the open surface. Making sure cleaning routines cover right up to and across each seam, not just the centre of each panel, avoids this becoming a visible pattern over time.

Ask specifically how panels are aligned during installation and what tolerance they work to for the join gap. A supplier who can answer this clearly, rather than deferring the detail to “the installers will sort it,” is usually the one who’s done this often enough to get it right.

More, smaller panels are generally easier to manufacture and transport but create more seams to manage. Fewer, larger panels look more seamless but cost more and need more careful handling on site. Most suppliers will talk through this trade-off once they know your room’s exact dimensions.

Panels destined for the same wall are typically produced in the same batch, using the same material run, to avoid subtle colour or texture differences becoming visible once they’re installed side by side under the same lighting.

Even perfectly manufactured panels can look misaligned if the wall itself is slightly uneven, which is why experienced installers spend as much time levelling the wall as fitting the panels. A badly aligned join shows up as a visible step or an inconsistent gap that widens and narrows along its length, the kind of detail that separates a supplier used to this scale of installation from one working it out for the first time. Asking how many installations of a similar size a supplier has completed is a fair, direct way to find out which one is being hired.

Reputable suppliers test and colour-match an entire batch of panels destined for one wall before they leave the factory, and requesting a single finished sample panel beforehand gives a clearer sense of colour and texture than a swatch or photo ever will. If a wall is extended years later with panels from a different production run, or a panel needs replacing, ask the supplier to check the match against the existing panels first, and hand over the original specification to whichever installer does the work so the new panels are fitted to the same standard as the first ones.

Beyond the initial installation check, add panel joins to whatever periodic maintenance walk-round already covers other office fixtures. A join that was tight at handover can occasionally need a minor adjustment years later as a building settles.
