Ask for the actual material specification
A genuine ceramic steel product should have a documented specification covering the steel substrate gauge, the coating composition, and the firing process used. If a supplier can’t provide this beyond a product description, that’s worth treating as a signal to ask more questions rather than assuming the description is accurate.
Check for a magnetic test in person or in a sample
A genuine ceramic steel surface holds a standard magnet firmly and evenly across the whole panel. If a sample or showroom board shows noticeably weaker or inconsistent magnetic pull in different areas, that can indicate a thinner or lower-quality steel substrate behind the coating, even if the surface itself looks correct.
Look at the warranty being offered
Manufacturers confident in their ceramic steel construction typically back the surface with a meaningful warranty against scratching, staining and coating failure, often running to a decade or more. A short or vague warranty on the writing surface itself, separate from general product warranty terms, is worth questioning further.
Request documentation, not just marketing copy
Product data sheets, material certifications where relevant, and clear answers about country of manufacture and quality control process are reasonable to ask for on any specification of scale, such as a full whiteboard wall or a multi-room fit-out. A supplier unwilling or unable to provide this level of detail may still be selling a genuine ceramic steel product, but it becomes harder to verify.
A short checklist before you order
Confirm the substrate gauge and coating composition in writing, ask what warranty specifically covers the writing surface, request a physical sample to test magnetic pull and marker glide directly, and check whether the specification matches what’s actually delivered once the order arrives.
