Manufacturing begins with a steel sheet cut to the required panel size and cleaned to remove any oil, oxidation or residue that would prevent the coating from bonding evenly. The substrate gauge, meaning the thickness of the steel, affects how rigid the finished panel is and how well it resists flexing or denting once installed.

The ceramic enamel is applied as a fine powder or slurry across the steel surface, then the panel is fired in a kiln at several hundred degrees. This step fuses the coating directly into the surface of the steel rather than leaving it sitting on top as paint or laminate would, which is why a genuine ceramic steel surface doesn’t chip or peel the way a painted surface eventually can.

The firing temperature and duration affect how hard and how consistent the finished coating is. An underfired coating can remain slightly porous, which shows up later as staining or difficulty erasing older marker residue. A well-fired coating is what gives the surface its resistance to scratching, its smooth marker glide, and its ability to wipe clean without ghosting building up over years of use.

Once fired, panels are cut to final dimensions, edges are finished (frameless, framed or trimmed depending on the product line), and the back of the panel is prepared for magnetic mounting hardware. For multi-panel installations such as a whiteboard wall, panel edges also need to be cut precisely enough that adjoining panels sit flush, which affects how visible the seam is once installed.

Reputable manufacturers test finished panels for coating consistency, magnetic pull, and surface hardness before they’re approved for sale. This is also where inconsistent suppliers are more likely to cut corners, since these checks add cost but don’t show up as a visible difference until the board has been in daily use for a year or more.
