A whiteboard’s own finish can be flawless and still look poorly considered if the gap or trim around its edge is inconsistent, visibly uneven, or clashes with the surrounding wall finish. This edge is often the first thing a critical eye notices, precisely because it sits at the boundary between two different materials.

Treating it as a genuine design decision, rather than whatever the installer improvises on the day, is what separates a considered result from an adequate one.

Clients and end users rarely comment on a whiteboard’s core specification, such as surface material, but they do notice an untidy edge, which makes this detail disproportionately important to the room’s perceived quality.

A recessed reveal, a slim trim strip, or a fully flush frameless edge are the three most common approaches, each suited to a different overall aesthetic. A recessed reveal reads as more architectural and deliberate, while a trim strip is the simpler, more budget-friendly option.

A fully frameless edge gives the cleanest look but relies most heavily on wall flatness, so it is worth confirming with the supplier whether the specific wall in question can realistically support that level of finish.

Where a room already has a consistent reveal or shadow-line detail used elsewhere, such as around doors or built-in joinery, matching that same detail at the whiteboard junction ties the whole room together rather than introducing a new, unrelated edge treatment.

This is a small specification decision that has a disproportionate effect on how considered the finished room feels.

Where no existing reveal detail exists to match, agreeing a single consistent reveal width for the whiteboard and specifying it clearly is still better than leaving the dimension to be decided on site.

The most common issue is a visible gap left because the wall wasn’t flat enough at the edge, followed closely by a trim detail that doesn’t match the room’s existing finishes. Both are avoidable with a wall survey and a specified junction detail agreed before installation, rather than left to be resolved on site.

A third, less obvious mistake is specifying a trim finish that matches the whiteboard’s frame but clashes with the wall’s own skirting or door architrave, creating a junction that is neat in isolation but inconsistent with the rest of the room.

Both issues share the same root cause: the junction was decided informally on site rather than specified in advance, which is exactly the gap a documented detail is meant to close.

The junction detail should appear in the drawings alongside the board’s own specification, not be left as a verbal instruction to whoever installs it. This gives the installer a clear target to work to, and gives the architect a detail they can actually check against once the board is fitted.

A simple annotated section drawing, even a small one, gives an installer far more to work from than a verbal description, and takes little extra time to produce alongside the rest of the specification.

This document does not need to be elaborate. A single dimensioned section, cross-referenced to the main whiteboard specification, is generally sufficient for most projects.
