Assume a ceramic steel whiteboard has to be white because that is how nearly every one looks, and a project with a specific colour brief can rule the material out before checking whether that assumption is even true. Ceramic steel can be finished in colours through a fired process, not just left as standard white. Know that before assuming white is the only option, and colour stops being a reason to choose a different, less durable surface instead.

Can ceramic steel whiteboards be made in colours other than white?
How colour is applied to ceramic steel
Colour comes from pigments mixed into the ceramic enamel itself, applied before the coating is fired onto the steel substrate. Because the colour is part of the fired coating rather than a surface layer applied afterward, it doesn’t wear off or fade the way a painted colour finish can over years of use.
Gloss level and colour consistency
The finish level, whether high gloss or a lower-gloss matte finish such as SatinTones, is controlled during the same firing process as the colour itself. A lower-gloss finish tends to show colour more evenly under different lighting, since less light bounces directly off the surface at a viewing angle, which is one reason matte finishes are often specified for meeting rooms with strong overhead or natural light. Chameleon’s own SatinTones range covers 15 muted tones, each referenced against both NCS and Pantone codes, so a specifier can match or intentionally contrast the board against other finishes in the room.
Specifying colour for an interior project
For architects and interior specifiers, colour on a ceramic steel board is usually referenced against a standard colour system such as NCS, similar to how paint or fabric finishes are specified elsewhere in a project. This allows a whiteboard surface to be matched, or deliberately contrasted, against other interior finishes rather than defaulting to white by omission.
Where a coloured finish makes sense, and where it doesn't
A coloured or matte finish suits spaces where the board is meant to blend into the interior design rather than stand out as a purely functional object, such as reception areas, meeting rooms or executive offices. For boards used primarily for intensive daily writing, such as a classroom or a busy project room, standard white or a light satin finish often remains the more practical choice for maximum marker contrast and readability.
