A writing wall installed along one side of a room only works well if furniture is arranged to give each intended group zone a clear, unobstructed view and access to its section. Furniture left in its previous position can leave some zones effectively unusable.

A useful test is to physically walk through the intended layout before finalising furniture placement, checking that every group’s path to their wall zone is genuinely clear and direct.

Groups moving to and from their wall zone need a clear path that doesn’t cut through a neighbouring group’s space, which is worth planning explicitly rather than assuming students will navigate around each other without disruption.

This is worth revisiting once furniture is actually in place and students are moving through the space, since a walkway that looks adequate on a drawing can feel considerably tighter in practice.

A layout optimised purely for group work may not suit a lesson that also needs whole-class instruction time, so a flexible arrangement, with furniture that can be reconfigured between formats, tends to get more consistent use than a single fixed layout.

Furniture on castors or otherwise easy to reposition quickly between lesson formats tends to get used far more flexibly than furniture that requires real effort to move, which often ends up staying in one fixed position regardless of the lesson’s actual needs.

Running a trial lesson with the intended layout before finalising furniture positions, rather than fixing everything permanently on installation day, catches sightline or access issues while they’re still easy to adjust.

Involving the teachers who will actually use the room in this trial run, rather than finalising the layout without their input, tends to surface practical issues a purely theoretical plan might miss.
