A daily cleaning routine that keeps a large whiteboard scratch-free

Deep-clean a large whiteboard once a month and it can still end up staining faster than one wiped down briefly but consistently after every heavy use, since marker residue left to dry repeatedly is what actually causes long-term damage. A simple routine followed reliably beats an occasional thorough clean. Build it into an end-of-day habit and the board keeps looking presentable for years, not just after the next deep clean.

The daily wipe

A cleaner designed specifically for dry erase surfaces, used with a soft microfibre cloth, is the safest combination for daily use. Wiping in one consistent direction rather than in circles tends to leave a more even finish across the board. This single habit, done consistently, prevents most of the build-up that eventually leads to more stubborn marks requiring a harder, more abrasive clean. Rinsing or replacing the cloth regularly during cleaning, rather than reusing a saturated one, also helps avoid redistributing debris across the surface instead of lifting it away.

This takes only a minute or two even on a large panel, but skipping it even occasionally is usually what allows marker residue to build up into something a daily wipe can no longer fully remove.

The weekly deeper clean

Alongside the daily wipe, a slightly more thorough clean once a week helps catch anything the quick daily pass might miss, particularly in corners or along the edge of the frame where residue can accumulate unnoticed. This does not need to be a lengthy process, just a more deliberate pass with the same dry erase cleaner, giving a little extra attention to the areas that saw the heaviest use during the week.

On a panel close to Chameleon’s maximum single-piece size of 1180 by 2980 millimetres, working in sections during the deeper clean rather than trying to cover the whole surface at once tends to give a more even, thorough result.

Products and tools to avoid

Household glass cleaners, abrasive sponges and permanent markers all carry some risk of scratching a large whiteboard surface over repeated use. Even small amounts of the wrong product, used daily, can add up to noticeable wear within a year or two. Paper towels can also leave faint scratches on some surfaces over time, which is why a dedicated microfibre cloth is generally the safer choice. It is worth checking product labels specifically for compatibility with the board’s surface material, since not every dry erase cleaner suits every finish equally well. Ceramic steel is considerably more forgiving of an occasional lapse than melamine or laminate, since its fired glass-like coating resists the fine scratching that builds up gradually on softer surfaces, but the same good habits still protect its finish and appearance over time.

This applies equally to a standard white panel and a SatinTones colour-matched surface, since both use the same ceramic steel material and the same cleaning sensitivity, regardless of which of the 15 tones is chosen.

Monthly inspection

A short monthly check is worth building into the routine alongside daily and weekly cleaning. Looking closely for faint scratching, changes in texture, or any area that no longer erases as cleanly as the rest of the board helps catch early wear before it spreads. This is also a good moment to check mounting hardware and any accessories, confirming everything is still securely in place. On a ceramic steel board covered by a lifetime warranty on writing and erasing performance, this inspection is mostly reassurance rather than a search for problems, but it remains a useful habit on any large board regardless of surface material.

It is also a sensible moment to check the board’s mounting, since Chameleon’s TÜV-certified magnetic system is designed to hold a panel flat and level, and a board that has shifted slightly can wear unevenly at points of contact over time.

Cloth and eraser management

A dedicated cloth kept specifically for the board, rather than shared with other cleaning tasks, avoids introducing grit or residue from unrelated products. Replacing or washing the cloth regularly keeps it from redistributing debris across the surface. The same applies to a dry eraser, which should be checked periodically for embedded grit that could scratch the board on its next pass. Rotating responsibility for cloth and eraser upkeep across a few team members, rather than assigning it permanently to one person, also tends to keep the habit going during busy periods.

Keeping separate cloths for the daily wipe and the weekly deeper clean, rather than using the same one for both, also helps avoid transferring grime from a more intensive clean into everyday use.

Why consistency beats intensity

A board cleaned lightly every day generally maintains smooth erasability and reduces the risk of abrasive damage far more effectively than one that gets an intensive clean once a month, since consistency prevents the build-up of grit and residue that intensity has to fight against later. Marker residue left to dry repeatedly, rather than wiped soon after use, is what actually causes most long-term staining, so a simple, low-effort daily routine followed reliably beats an occasional deep clean. Teams that keep this up consistently rarely think about it at all after the first few weeks, since it becomes as automatic as tidying a desk before leaving, and building it into an end-of-day routine rather than an occasional task is what keeps a heavily used board looking presentable for years.

The underlying ceramic steel surface, built on an FSC-certified MDF core with a Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified enamel layer, is designed to hold up to years of this routine, which is exactly why Chameleon backs it with a lifetime warranty on writing and erasing rather than a fixed-term one.
