Ceramic steel or film: which whiteboard surface keeps writing well for years?

A whiteboard with a film layer often looks fine when it is delivered and costs less than a ceramic steel board. The difference only shows after a few years of use, when markers erase less cleanly, the surface becomes patchy and scratches stay visible. A ceramic steel surface is made for that moment. Put the two side by side and the choice is less about the purchase price and more about how long a board keeps doing what you bought it for. Chameleon therefore gives a lifetime guarantee on writing and dry erasing on ceramic steel.

What is the difference between ceramic steel and film?

A Chameleon whiteboard panel consists of a 10 mm thick, water-resistant MDF core (FSC-certified) with a top layer of magnetic ceramic steel. That enamelled layer is Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified and known for a hard, even and scratch-resistant surface. The writing surface is therefore part of the material itself.

On a whiteboard with film, the writing surface is a flexible, thin plastic layer applied to a backing. That makes the system lighter and cheaper to buy. But the layer you write and erase on every day is also the weakest link: film is much more sensitive to scratches, wear and cleaning products than enamelled steel.

This article is about whiteboards with a film layer: panels on which the film has already been applied. Loose whiteboard film, such as sheets or rolls that you apply to a wall or other surface yourself, is a different product and is not covered here.

Ceramic steel and film compared in daily use

These are the differences that matter most in a meeting room or classroom.

  • Writing feel: smooth and natural on ceramic steel, often rough on film
  • Scratch resistance: very high on ceramic steel, low on film
  • Wear resistance: very high on ceramic steel, low on film
  • Chemical resistance: high on ceramic steel, low on film
  • Erasability: effortless with a flawless result on ceramic steel, reasonable on film with marks appearing over time
  • Magnets: strong on ceramic steel, so standard magnets work; weak on film, which only holds lightweight magnets
  • Safety: ceramic steel is unbreakable and robust, film is susceptible to tearing
  • Purchase price: film is cheaper to buy, ceramic steel is a higher investment in quality
  • Residual value: ceramic steel has a very good residual value and is easily given a second life, film has a low residual value

Why a film whiteboard becomes patchy over time

A board is not used once but thousands of times. Every time you write, erase and clean, a soft surface wears down a tiny bit. On film this can cause fine scratches in which pigment stays behind. The board turns greyer, erasing takes more effort and shadows of old writing become visible. Cleaning products speed this up, because film is less chemically resistant.

Ceramic steel is hard and scratch-resistant. Erasing stays effortless with a flawless result, and the surface can withstand a cleaning product. That is why writing and erasing feel the same for years, even in a room where the board is used every day.

Magnets, custom sizes and mounting

A ceramic steel panel is strongly magnetic, so standard magnets hold paper and plans in place. On film, generally only lightweight magnets work.

Custom sizes are also possible with film. Ceramic steel can likewise be made in any size and shape, including with a logo. The standard maximum panel size is 1180 x 2980 mm, and 1480 x 2980 mm for S200 and C301. The panels are mounted with a TÜV-certified magnetic mounting system, so even a large writing surface can be fitted safely, quickly and completely flush.

Colour and look: colour does not set them apart

Colour is no reason to choose for or against film, because film is available in a great many colours. The choice is wide with ceramic steel too. Chameleon supplies ceramic steel in four surface types: High Gloss, SatinTones, Chalk and Projection. SatinTones is a matt surface in 15 subtle colour shades that is clearly legible from every viewing angle without distracting reflections, and a good alternative to glass whiteboards. The full range, with accurate colour values, is available in pCon, and material samples are available on request.

The difference is therefore not the number of colours, but how the surface looks after years of use: whether colour and gloss stay even, and whether writing and erasing keep working.

What does the guarantee on a film whiteboard actually cover?

Chameleon gives a lifetime guarantee on writing and dry erasing on ceramic steel. The surface is made so that years later you still write and erase as well as on the first day. A guarantee always covers a specific function and not every kind of damage, so read the terms here too.

Whiteboards with a film layer are often offered with a 10-year guarantee. That sounds like a strong promise, but its value lies in what the terms exclude. In the guarantee terms of whiteboards with a film layer that we have read, the erasability guarantee does not apply to breakage, scratches, damage, gradual wear from normal use, loss of gloss, the construction or mounting, residue of permanent or other unsuitable markers, the use of unsuitable cleaning products or abrasives, and consequential damage.

Set that beside what a board goes through in practice. Gradual wear from normal use is exactly what happens in the first years. If that is excluded, the guarantee does not cover the situation you need it for.

Five questions to ask every supplier

A long guarantee period says little without the terms. These questions help you compare.

  • What exactly does the guarantee cover: the surface, the erasability, the mounting?
  • Is wear from normal use covered or excluded?
  • Which markers and cleaning products can you use without voiding the guarantee?
  • What does the surface look like after two to three years of intensive use?
  • What is the residual value, or the reuse, of the surface at the end of its life?

A supplier who answers these questions simply is confident in their product.

When is film a sensible choice?

Film suits temporary spaces, low intensity of use, or situations where the purchase price is decisive. For rooms where a board is used every day, such as meeting rooms, classrooms and project interiors, the sum over the years usually works out better for ceramic steel: less replacement, fewer problems with stains and a material that can have a second life afterwards.

So do not calculate with the price per panel, but with the cost per year of use.

What does the difference mean for you?

Whether you sell, buy or use ceramic steel every day, these are the consequences of choosing between ceramic steel and film.

For dealers

  • Lifetime guarantee on writing and dry erasing on ceramic steel: a guarantee you can pass on without reservation. With film, it is wise to check in the terms whether wear from normal use is covered.
  • Fewer complaints and replacements: film becomes stained and wears over time, while ceramic steel keeps erasing effortlessly and cleanly.
  • A strong product to show: ceramic steel is unbreakable and strongly magnetic, so standard magnets work.
  • Price: film is cheaper to buy. Ceramic steel is a higher investment, but has a very good residual value and can have a second life, whereas film has a low residual value. Calculate with the cost per year of use instead of the price per panel.
  • Colour makes no difference: both are available in many colours.

For clients and users

  • Lifetime guarantee on writing and dry erasing on ceramic steel: you keep writing and erasing perfectly for years.
  • Costs over the whole period of use, not only the price at purchase.
  • In a room that is used every day, writing and erasing on ceramic steel feel the same for years.
  • Sustainability: the enamelled top layer is Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified, the core is FSC-certified and the panel has a very good residual value.
  • Guarantee: ask every supplier for the terms, using the five questions above.
  • Judge it yourself: request material samples, view the colours in pCon or visit the showroom.
