A ceramic steel whiteboard panel starts with a 10 mm water-resistant MDF core, faced with a layer of ceramic enamel that is fired onto a steel substrate rather than sprayed or laminated on. This firing process, plus hand-lacquered edge finishing after the panels are cut, adds cost compared with a painted steel or laminate surface, but produces a harder, more chemically resistant writing layer that holds up to years of markers, cleaning and repeated use.

Ceramic steel surfaces rate very high for scratch resistance, wear resistance and chemical resistance, compared with average ratings for lacquered steel and low ratings for film or paint finishes.
