A specification checklist for a bespoke whiteboard wall project
Have accurate room measurements, not estimates
Exact wall dimensions and ceiling height, ideally from a site survey or accurate architectural drawings, are the foundation everything else builds from. An estimate here tends to surface as a problem once panels are already being manufactured to fit those numbers, which is a far more expensive stage to discover a mistake.
Decide if a design element is part of the brief
A cutout, branded shape or colour tied to existing interior design needs to be decided early, since it affects panel manufacturing in a way a plain rectangular layout doesn’t. Deciding this after panels are already in production isn’t possible without starting the manufacturing process again.
Note every fixed obstruction on the wall
Doors, windows, switches and existing fixtures all need to be marked on the brief, since a bespoke layout is planned around them from the start rather than adjusted after the fact once a supplier arrives to install and discovers something wasn’t accounted for.
Keep a copy of the final approved drawing
Once a layout drawing is signed off, keep a copy on file, ideally somewhere the facilities team can find it easily. It’s the reference point for any future replacement panel, maintenance question, or expansion of the wall later on, potentially years after the original project team has moved on.
Confirm who signs off before manufacturing starts
Deciding upfront who has final approval on the design, whether that’s an architect, interior designer or facilities manager, avoids a delay waiting for sign-off once a supplier is ready to begin production and the whole project timeline is depending on that one approval.
